Leap of Faith

The fish swirled and spiralled and circled around the glass
Choking in a pool of poison given by his captor
His prison all but guaranteed to be his demise
He’d no hope of escape as he was isolated
But for one fish outside the glass who witnessed this crime
Who willed the victim to break free of the toxic brew

Retching and riving and suffocating in the glass
He glimpsed at his companion refracted and warped
Her gold scales barely visible through the toxic haze
How he longed to swim beside her in the fresh water
Alas he was weak, soon the poison would consume him
He channelled his remaining strength in one leap of faith

The fish torpedoed and sprang and flew out of the glass
And reached the open water to meet his companion
Freedom from his captors was at last reality
To feel water pass through his gills where snake venom flowed
He looked back to find the glass shattered into pieces
And began to doubt whether it existed at all

He began pondering and pacing and postulating
The fish realised he was in fact not a fish at all
He was merely a thought cycling like a tornado
Now free from torment and strangulation of self-doubt
No longer bound by the institution that trapped him
He was now an emperor conquering his own destiny
